Removing a keylogger from your computer, after it has already been infecting your computer for some time, can mean that any information already collected by that keylogger could have fallen into the wrong hands. Therefore, in order to keep your information safe from keyloggers it is important to safeguard your computer from infection to the best of your ability. As any keylogging security expert will tell you, one of the most important anti keylogging steps you can take is to keep your computer's software up to date.
Keyloggers which are inadvertently downloaded from the internet often access your computer by taking advantage of a weakness in your computer's software; these weakness are generally used to open up a back door, which identity thieves use to stealthily enter your computer and install a keylogger. When software manufacturers become aware of these backdoors in their software, akin to welding that backdoor shut, they scramble to offer a security update as quickly as possible. But what if you don't install that security update? The result is that you leave your computer wide open to a keylogging virus. As an anti keylogging step, it is extremely important to install all security updates offered by the manufacturer, keeping your software up to date. In particular there are two pieces of software that deserve your special attention, and should always be kept as up to date as possible.
1. Your internet browser
When a malicious keylogger is finding its way into your computer, your internet browser is often the first place it checks for a backdoor. Your internet browser is your first line of defense in your anti keylogging arsenal, and if your browser is weak, it will be easily exploited by identity thieves. Not only should you install any security updates offered by your browser, but you should also be running the latest version of your browser at all times. If there is a newer version of your browser, you should update immediately to the latest version by doing a quick google search for the name of your browser.
2. Your operating system
Maintaining an up to date operating system is your secret weapon in staying one step ahead of identity thieves. By keeping your computer's operating system up to date, you protect your computer's vital organs - to the best of your ability - from infection. You can think of it a bit like taking your vitamins - doing so may not protect you outright from infection, but doing so will go a long way to keep your computer healthy.
Although keeping your computer's software up to date is a crucial step in your anti keylogging efforts, bear in mind that even with state of the art software, your computer could still become infected.
